Taseko President & CEO Stuart McDonald recently sat down with Mark Ferguson, S&P Global’s Director of Metals & Mining Research at the CERAWeek conference in Houston TX, where he details Taseko’s recent milestones and future growth strategy as a North American-focused copper producer.
In this one-to-one discussion, Mr. McDonald shares more about a recent Taseko milestone – achieving first copper production at Florence Copper in Arizona. Florence Copper is the first new major source of copper in the United States in more than a decade from a greenfield operation, marking a major milestone for Taseko and domestic copper production.
Mr. McDonald outlines Florence Copper’s unique in-situ copper recovery (ISCR) production method, an innovative and proven process with best-in-class environmental and operational performance. Florence Copper is the first greenfield ISCR project at this scale in the world.
Mr. McDonald also shares his thoughts about what might be next for Taseko, including the potential for further ISCR development in North America, as well as the Company’s next-in-line copper development opportunity in British Columbia. The Yellowhead Project has the potential to become one of the largest copper producers in Canada.
Global demand for copper and other critical minerals is set to grow exponentially in the years ahead, due to both conventional demand in construction, manufacturing and industrial sectors, and new demand associated with electrification, digitalization, national security and the energy transition. Mr. McDonald and Mr. Ferguson discuss what this means for permitting new mining projects in North America amidst the shifting geopolitics of critical minerals.
These topics, and more, were top of mind at CERAWeek, an event that brings together more than 10,000 participants from 2,350+ companies across 89 countries for the world’s premier energy conference.
